BWINDI FOREST NATIONAL PARK

Bwindi Forest Reserve was gazetted in 1942 and later upgraded to the level of national park in 1992 The park is situated in south Western Uganda, on the edge of the Albertine Rift It is 331 square kilometers in size and on an altitude range of 1,160 meters to 2,607 meters The annual average temperature range is 70c-200c. The majority of the people living around the park are Bakiga and Bafumbira.

Uganda’s Mountain Gorillas

Bwindi is a habitat for over 326 gorillas, almost a half of the world’s population of mountain gorillas. There are also 346 species of birds and over 200 species of butterflies. This afromontane forest has dense under storey of stern, vines and shrubs. About 324 tree species have been recorded here, 10 of which occur nowhere in Uganda.

HOW TO GET THERE

Bwindi is located in south-western Uganda, approximately 530km from Kampala. From several directions, the park can be reached by road.

Queen Elizabeth National Park (Mweya)-Kihihi-Buhoma
This route passes through the park’s southern Ishasha sector, offering a chance of a stopover to hunt for the famous tree-climbing lions. Bwindi is 64km from Ishasha and 160km from Mweya.

Gorilla Trekking Essentials

Jungle Shoes: suitable for steep muddy slopes and carry a rain jacket because the park is often wet.

Plugs & Jungle Sounds:put on ear plugs for those who feel uncomfortable with jungle sounds.

Rain gear & sunscreen lotion: carry rain gear, sunscreen lotion, a hat and insect repellant

Packed Lunch:Packed lunch is very neccesary for the exercise.

RULES TO FOLLOW WHEN TACKING GORILLAS

For the purpose of conservation for the park and gorillas ,visits to the gorilla family are tightly controlled. The following rules must be strictly adhered to:

one with a communicable disease (e.g. flu, diarrhea) is allowed to enter the park.
Stay together in a tight group while with the gorillas, don’t surround them.
Don’t get closer than 7 meters to the gorillas
Don’t use flashes while photographing the gorillas.
Don’t eat or smoke when with the gorillas or within a distance of 200 meters from the gorillas.
Turn away from the gorillas if you have to sneeze or cough. Cover your nose or mouth in the process.
